Co-op store showing a sales receipt transfer system, Barnsley, South Yorkshire, 1955. Artist: Michael Walters

Co-op store showing a sales receipt transfer system, Barnsley, South Yorkshire, 1955. The Fancy good department at the Barnsley Co-op in 1955 prior to its refurbishment. A variety of porcelain and kitchenware can be seen on display but of more interest is the corded system of transferring sales receipts, which can be seen above the shop floor. The system (in this case a Dart Exchange) would transfer the sales receipt to a central point to be recorded and then back again to the customer. Some of these units would be replaced by a compressed air system before being phased out in the late 1960s and early 1970s.
