Armoured catfish (Spatuloricaria atratoensis). X-ray of a section through a male armoured catfish (family Loricariidae). The 'beard' (spiky) on the head (left) of this South American catfish is made up of toothlike structures called dermal denticles, whilst the body is covered in an armour of bony plates. This specimen measures centimetres in length.
