Silva Tipple New Lake (1898-1983), US biblical scholar. As Silva Tipple, she studied at the University of Vermont, graduating in 1924. She was awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship in 1929 and 1930 in the field of religion. The award was related to her research on textual criticism of the New Testament (in Greek, Syriac and Armenian). Lake obtained her doctorate from Brown University in 1936. In 1938, Lake was co-leader of a Brown University and University of Pennsylvania joint expedition to excavate the site of the ancient city of Van in Asia Minor. Her first husband was Robert Warrington New. Her second husband (married 1932) was Kirsopp Lake (1872-1946), with whom she co-authored many works on the bible.
