He removed to Michi-gan in 1850 and entered the State University,where he received the degree of Bachelor of Arts in1854. He then taught for a year at HernandoAcademy, Mississippi, and the following year atCarroll College, Waukesha, Wisconsin, after whichhe travelled and studied abroad for about fiveyears. In 1862-1863 >e was instructor in ModernLanguages at the University of Michigan, and from1863 to 1870 he occupied the chair of Modern. EDWARD PAVSlJN EVANS Languages and Literatures.
