Polarised light micrograph of a transverse section of the mature wood of big, broad, or large-leafed mahogany, or Honduras or West Indian mahogany (Swietenia macrophylla). The wood is valued for furniture making and gum from the bark is used to tan and dye leather. There are numerous vessels and transversely sectioned rays are seen running vertically. Magnification: x27 at 10cm wide.
