Genome research. View of the DNA sequencing laboratory at The Institute for Genomic Research (TIGR) in Gaithersburg, Maryland, USA. Here scientists monitor equipment that is used to analyse the structure of human genes, and certain animal and plant genes. Sequencing the genes of a variety of organisms enables researchers to understand the evolution of the function of human genes. At TIGR, 960 cDNA ESTs (Expressed Sequence Tags) are produced each day. These \tags\" enable the reading of cDNA, lengths of copied genetic material identical to genes. Mapping human genes will lead to the development of genetic therapies for inherited human diseases and disorders."
