River bacteria research. Soil scientist taking water samples from a stream to test levels of E. coli (Escherichia coli) released from the disturbed bottom sediments during heavy rain. Water flow was increased by discharging water from a truck (background) into the stream at a rate and volume that replicated conditions caused by heavy rain. Photographed at Beaverdam Creek, Pennsylvania, USA.
