RAILROAD DIGEST January, 19OI The Eries Six-Wheel Switching Locomotive—Wide Fire-Box Railroad Gazette, Dec. 21, 1000, p. A. E. Mitchell, superintendeut of motive power of theErie R. R., has designed a wide fire-bos switching engine thatshould have certain advantages of the Wootten fire-box, with-out separating engineer and fireman. Six engines were builtat the companys Susquehanna shops, the boilers having beenbuilt at the Baldwin Works. These locomotives are allequipped with the Haven Jet, and so have been an impor-tant part of the Eries fire service. The designer had in viewthe possibility of using, later on, the same general boiler de-sign with greater depth of fire-box for burning soft coal athigh speeds, and also the possibility of using any of the manywheel arrangements which constitute the principal difference. between the various types of engines. The engines burn thecommon mixture on the Erie east of Hornellsville, viz., 35 percent, bituminous and 05 per cent, birds-eye anthracite. Theweight distribution is, on front pair, 44,700 lbs.; driver, 52,500lbs.; trailer, 47,900 lbs. The front frame splice is simple andstrong. The grate frames support in the center of the fire-box is trussed. The two front rows of crown stays are but-ton-head slings, with a slot in the pinhole of the top one to ad-mit of slight upward movement. Compound Locomotives—Norwegian StateRailways Olascrs Annalen, JSov. 1, 1900. A compound locomotive built for the Norwegian State Rail-ways by Richard Harlman at Chemnitz and exhibited at theParis Exposition is very fully illustrated in Glasers Annalenfor Nov. 1, 1900. The engine is of the ten-wheeled type, andis intended for both passenger and freight service. The totalweight is gross tons, of which 36 tons arc upon thedriving axles. The boiler h
