Sultan Mahmud I. Sultan Mahmud I wears a fur-lined kaftan and a kind of turban called a kâtibî. Mahmud was less worldly than his uncle and predecessor, Ahmed III, who, after an uprising in 1730, had to step down because his extravagant life-style was no longer tolerated.
