One hundred of thesecars will be built in the shops of the company, fifty havebeen ordered from the American Car Company and fiftyhave been ordered from the Southern Car Company. Thecars will be of the same type and will involve a number ofchanges from the present standard car of the company, particularly in the use of maximum traction trucks, motors district loop, comprising a total of miles of number of miles of track in the non-congested dis-trict, comprising that part of the line extending betweenHalsted Street and the western outlying terminal, miles. The total number of miles of track in theline, therefore, was miles. The entire trip was with-in the limits of the city of Chicago. It was found that the stops per mile in the congesteddistrict, including slow-downs, averaged about Li-. Chicago Railways Car—Combination of Transverse and Longitudinal Seating with field control, deep side girders, use of some wood iiithe floor framing, cast-steel bolsters, greater seating capac-ity and lower weight per seated passenger. Earlier designsof the company are described in the Electric RailwayJournal for Nov. 7, 1908, Aug. 28, 1909, and Oct. 7, new cars will follow the double-end design now in useon the lines of the company. No other design was considered seriously at the pres-ent time in view of the desire of the company to have thecars for winter operation and of the disinclination to makea radical change in type without a careful study to deter-mine the applicability of other types to the particulartraffic conditions existing in Chicago. The company, how-ever, will undoubtedly make engineering studies in thefuture, when it has more time to do so, in order to deter-mine whether another type would be better suited to exist-ing conditio
