Sam Ting, Chinese-born American physicist. In November 1974, Ting's team at the Brookhaven National Laboratory, Long Island, discovered the J/psi particle, the first known particle to contain a new kind of quark: the charm quark. Ting (born 1936) shared the 1976 Nobel prize for physics for this work with Burton Richter, whose group at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center (SLAC) discovered the particle at the same time. The photograph was taken in 1984 and shows Ting in front of the control electronics of his MARK-J detector at DESY, the particle physics laboratory in Hamburg.
