Separatist Soldiers on a Soviet Era BMP with both Russian and Transnistrian flags during the “War of Transnistria” in 1992.

Soviet era Infantry Fighting Vehicle, BMP, with armed Pro-Russian, separatist soldiers and flying both Russian and Transnistrian flags passes a civilian vehicle flying a white flag in Bendery on the road from Tiraspol to Chisinau, Moldova, during the “War of Transnistria” in 1992. Soldier’s military uniforms have no insignias or markings. Transnistria along the Dniester River on the Western border of the Ukraine and Moldova is 1/3 Russian, 1/3 Ukrainian and 1/3 Moldavian. After the dissolution of the Soviet Union (USSR) separatists who, unlike Moldova, wished to stay with the USSR or Russia fought an armed conflict with Moldova in 1992. Currently Transnistria along with Nagorno-Karabakh, Abkhazia and Ossetia are considered “Frozen Conflict Zones” in the former Soviet Union. It is believed that over 600 died during the “War of Transnistria” in 1992. A ceasefire was declared in July of 1992, overseen by the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE).
