Porte de l'Avancée, Mont St Michel, Normandie (Normandy), France.

After the Bishop of Avranches had a vision of the Archangel Michael in 708 he ordered an oratory be built on the island. It became a place of pilgrimage. Richard I duke of Normandie installed Benedictine monks there in 966. Their simple church was replaced with a magnificent fortified Gothic abbey between 1400 and 1700. A UNESCO World Heritage Site.
