The proprietors procured an act of incorporation, under the title of theAdirondack Iron and Steel Company, with a capital, at first, of$1,000,000 (£200,000), afterward increased to !il;3,000,000 (£600,000),and constructed another furnace, a forge, stamping-mill, saw and gristmill, machine-shops, powder-house, dwellings, boarding-house, school-house, barns, sheds, and kilns for the manufacture of charcoal. At thefoot of Sandford Lake, eleven miles south from Adirondack village, theyalso commenced a settlement, and named it Tahawus, where thev erected.
