AFTER the death of Henry I., his son Otto I., known to historyas the Great, was acknowledged king by the nobles, andsolemnly crowned and anointed at Aix-la-Chapelle (Figs. 61, 62).The character of Otto appears in the pages of contemporary annal-ists and panegyrists shrouded in the dim twilight which surrounds.
