He was named after St. Charles Borromeo, uponwhose day he was born, as is frequently the case inIrish Catholic families, and also after Mr. CharlesGhequiere, a prominent merchant and intimate friendof the family. C. B. Tiernan has a book called Beauties ofRobertson, being Passages From the Works of theHistorian of Charles V., of Scotland, and of America,which has written in it Charles Tiernan, Christmas, 1811, From His Godmother, Ghequiere. The Portrait of him, from which this picture istaken, was painted by Chester Harding in 1827, andwas specially bequeathed by him to Uis son. He was educated at St. Marys College, Baltimore,at that time one of the most prominent educationalinstitutions in this country. He was a schoolmate, and warm personal friend ofSamuel Eccleston, afterwards Archbishop of Baltim
