Assist.—Very interesting is a parapet brought to light inthe church of S. Maria of the Angels, near Assisi. It offers 198 two arcades supported hy pilasters enclosing two large crossesamong palms, braids and birds. Little braidings wind roundthe arches, descend on the pillars, run along the arms of thecrosses, and it is curious to see how they change below and aretransformed into palms (see Fig. 102). Fleurv says that between Home and the shores of theAdriatic there was, in the tenth century, a gieat affinity ofstyle, chiefly explained by the pontifical dominion over theMarche and the Esarcato.
