Light micrograph of a species of green algae, Pediastrum boryanum, showing the aggregation of 16 individual cells that comprise the coenobia, the planktonic colony. The individual cells are attached to each other by mucilage pads; the outer cells possess tufts, a probable adaptation to the planktonic mode of life. Magnification: X 400 at 35mm size. Photgraphed through microscope fitted with X40 semi- plan objective and a X10 wide field semi- compensating eyepiece. Contrast system is Spectral-Rheinberg.
