In those early years ofAmerican yachting, the regatta day, ordays, of the New York Yacht Club werealmost general holidays among the menof large business, brokers and jobbers ; andevery craft that could float, from the skiffto the large excursion steamer, wasbrought into requisition for spectators. Before the next summer arrived, theclub had built itself a house at the ElysianFields, Hoboken ; and for more thantwenty years the start and finish of itsraces were off thi^ place, thousands of.
