INSPECTION PITS Probably the most unusual feature in the carhouse is theinspection pit design. As already explained, a single pitsufficient in size to cover all tracks has been constructed inthe carhouse floor. Tracks over this pit are supported oncolumns made of a single 3-in. x 3-in. x 5/16-in. angle with. Muskogee Carhouse—General View of Repair Shop a gusset plate at the top to serve as a point for attachinga strut, two diagonal tie rods and the rail clips. Twoangle lugs at the bottom serve to spread the load on theconcrete pedestals and as a means of anchoring the sup-porting structure to the pedestal foundations. These trackcolumns are spaced 9 ft. 6 in. apart and are built in bentssimilar to bridge buck braces. They are paired to supportthe rails of parallel tracks, and are stiffened diagonally byround tie rods with turnbuckles for adjustment. A 3-in. x 5/16-in. angle between columns serves as a strutto prevent overturning and as a support for the walkway be-tween the tracks. In order to provide sufficient girderstrength between the pit columns 100-lb. A. S. C. E. railhas been used to span the 9-ft. 6-in. interval between method of fastening the rail at the columns is by meansof clips bolted to the horizontal leg of the structural anglestrut.
