A cylinder may have a greater amount of clearanceat one end than at the other, and when it is said that acylinder has a given amount of clearance, for instance,8 per cent, it is meant that the clearance at the two endsof the cylinder averages 8 per cent at each end, and inlocomotive practice refers to the average amount ofclearance in each end of each cylinder.
