Entrance corridor to Tabatabei Historic House, Kashan, Iran


Kashan is the capital of Kashan County, in the province of Isfahan, Iran. In the past it was an important center for the production of high quality pottery and tiles. It is now widely known for manufacturing carpets, and other textile arts. There are a number of famous historic houses in Kashan in the vicinity of the Immamzadeh-ye-Sultan Mir Ahmad mausoleum, Qajar period. Tabatabaei Historic House is a walled house built in early 1880s for the affluent Tabatabaei was designed by the renowned Iranian architect Ustad Ali Maryam. Entrance to the house is through a traditional long narrow, covered lane, leading through the wall of the house. Traditional homes in Iranian desert towns are usually built around a central courtyard with windows, doors, arches and other architectural features facing in, rather than out. Tabatabaei House has four courtyards, elaborate wall decorations and elegant stained glass windows, and other classic features of traditional Persian residential architecture. Traditionally, activities in the house change location with the winter, the family would gather in the south-facing side of the house which has larger windows to make the best of the winter light. Then in summer, more activities would take place in the north-facing side where the windows were smaller.
