In 1567, in a squadron fitted out by Captain Hawkins, anear relation, Drake commanded the Judith. She wasdestroyed by the Spaniards. On his return to England, hewas sent up to London to lay before Sir William Cecil all theparticulars. Thus Drake was for the first time brought tothe notice of this great minister.
