Discusses attending an art auction and a visit to Hoboken. Transcription: hopes say I. Drawing, as want all the evening. Mr [Henry] Hart and Dillon [Mapother] called, joining our triumvirate. Ale and converse. 11. Saturday. Down town with Charley [Brown], first to the ?ǣEra ? Office, where I left the title drawing for ?ǣMysterious Chief, and Heroes of 1812, ? then, being joined again by Charley to a certain store in Pearl Street, where he made an essay at sketching it, and anon the job fell to me. Thus an hour passed; then a brief stroll on the breezy Battery over the loosened, ill paved pavement flanking the margent: then parting I went on my way back along the North River. Head gear during the afternoon. [William] Barth called anent of his spending the morrow with us. Evening, having finished head-gear for the time being, and Mr Hart calling, sallied out with him. Visited a picture Auction-room, where a drunken Transatlantic Robins was disposing of canvass of more or less merit at low prices. Mr [Joseph] Richardson and Dillon Mapother there. The picture sale ended we walked down Broadway, and after half an hour at an English tavern, and a pint of ale each bid good night to Mr Richardson, and individually I do the same at the Jersey ferry with Mr Hart and Dillon. 12. Sunday. Barth arrived. With him and Waud crossed to Hoboken, the ferry boat splintering the huge besieging ice blocks with exultant clamor, chilly Tritons below perchance wondering what was the cause of the awful pudder over their heads. Arrived, a most exhilarating and muddy river side ramble, fumigation, chatter, and now and then dropping astern for a few minutes quiet thought and thankfulness for this same beautiful world. Keep silent when in communion with Nature awhile, and you wonder at the delicious peaceful feeling which ?ǣcovers you all over like a cloak. ? You think, feel, and enjoy at every pore. Hickory nut hunting for half an hour or more, then a muddy but pleasant ramble and run back.
