The rounded, decorated stone in the middle in the foreground is known as the Roman Milestone, or an exact translation of the Latin Millarium Aureum would be "Golden Milestone." It was commissioned by the Roman Emperor Augustus in 20 and set up in the Roman Forum, as its location marked the point at which all roads to/from met. It was actually a column of gilded bronze or perhaps marble encased in gilded bronze. This photo dates to 1970.
