Thiskeeps the vegetation very thick and green. Wliile we werethere the rain fell nearly every afternoon. Still it was verydusty in the morning, as the w^nd blow^s the sand from themines, making it very disagreeable. A sign frequently seenin the shop windows reads as follows: Closed on account ofthe dust; come in. 115 OUR HOLIDAY IN AFRICA. JOHANNESBURG The Premier Diamond Mine is situated thirty miles eastof Pretoria. It is one of the largest in the world. We couldnot leave this part of Africa without seeing it and made aspecial trip there one day, going through the whole place. Thediamond Pipe is four hundred and fifty feet across oneway, and nine hundred feet the other way, being oval in shape,and goes straight down into the earth beyond the knowledgeof the local engineers. This mine has always been workedfrom the surface and it is an interesting sight to stand on thebank and see the army of mules and iron dump cars at workin the pit, five hundred feet below. All the blue rock hereis taken directly to the stamp mills and is ground and process is similar to that described in the Kimberly Mines,except that they do not spread the blue on the floors to be-come weather slacked. All the blast holes are loaded withdynamite and fuse fired at noon, while the miners areat lunch. We
