This area - known as 'Concordia' or the 'Konkordiaplatz' - is the source of the Aletsch Glacier, the longest glacier in Europe and a UNESCO World Heritage site. The path to the Monch (Monk) hut is maintained, but as it is on a glacier that means off the path there is a danger from crevasses.
