Mention The Review when you Vegetable Fordng. MAKING HOTBEDS. I wish you would please tell me ex- actly how to make hotbeds for spring plants, for sale, such as potatoes, to- matoes and cabbages. I live in Okla- homa. I have already made one of them, but did not succeed with it. C. G. L. To have the right kind of manure is the most important thing about making hotbeds. It matters little whether you make them on top of the ground or dig pits. I usually make them on top of the ground, but this method requires a little more manure, for it must be in a pile about two feet wider than the hot- bed all around, as the hotbed does not heat well around the edges unless the -pfle is wider than the frame that is set on top of it. Many growers dig out pits the size of the sash. These are two feet deep and the frame is set on top of the ground like an ordinary cold- frame. In either case there should be about three inches of soil on top of the manure, to hold in the heat and also to prevent the injury of the plants from the fumes that rise. As already stated, the manure must be right, or it will not heat well. Use only fresh, short horse manure, without much straw in it. Where shavings have been used for bedding, it does not make good hotbeds. The manure should be shaken up and turned over once or twice before being put
