Traditional palheiros - thatched triangular houses in Santana Madeira

Traditional palheiros - thatched triangular houses in Santana on the north coast of Madeira. These small A Frame houses built with natural stone or wood walls and thatched with straw have served the locals for centuries as stables and dwellings. These examples in the village of Santana have been built as a tourist attraction. The locals no longer build palheiros as dwellings but some can be seen in the region used as animal shelters or storage sheds in the fields these are generally covered nowadays with corrugated iron instead of straw.
