Other typical duties include comb building, removing debris, and guarding the entrance (Fig. 5). Although we think of bees as being very industrious, the workers spend many hours patrolling the hive and sitting idle on combs. The patrolling probably serves to inform bees of the needs of the colony and also produces heat to main- tain the warmth of the brood nest where the young bees are reared.
