Electric railway journal . missionfor the First District of New York has been author-ized to invite bids for the reconstruction of stationplatform edges in the Fourth Avenue subway, Brook-lyn, so as to provide for the operation of the newsteel cars purchased by the New York Municipal Rail-way Corporation. These cars are wider than the oldsubway cars, and thefore a considerable amount of re-construction in the platform is necessary for their ac-commodation. 898 ELECTRIC RAILWAY JOURNAL [Vol. XLV, No. 19 An Unusual Oxy-Acetylene Weld Recently the Oxweld Acetylene Company of Chicagohad occasion to make a weld on a 7600-lb. casting whichserved as a connection between the exhaust outlet of asteam turbine and the inlet of its condenser. Owing tochanges in the plant in which this was to be used it wasnecessary either to shorten the casting 18 in. or else toobtain an entirely new one, and it was decided to acceptthe former alternative by removing a section from thecasting and welding the flange in place again, although. CASTING PARTIALLY CUT BY DRILLING to make a weld on so large a casting it was necessaryto ship it to the Oxweld Companys shop in Chicago. In one of the accompanying illustrations the castingis shown with the 18-in. section partially cut out bydrilling. An electric hand drill was used for this opera-tion because it is impossible to cut cast-iron with theoxy-acetylene cutting flame. After the section had beenremoved and the flange moved up against the main cast-ing to close the 18-in. gap, a temporary furnace of brickwas constructed partially around the casting. Duringthe welding operation a charcoal fire was maintained inthis to preheat the metal, and the heat was continueduntil the weld was finished. The furnace and the workwere covered with asbestos sheets which were removedonly to expose that portion actually being welded inorder to maintain the casting at a uniform temperature.
