The cemetery at La Vernarède, Gard, France showing a grave with a typical metal cover.

La Vernarède is an old mining town in the Cévennes region in the south of France. Mining ceased in the town in 1954 leaving the town, like many others in the region, to decline. Above the town is the church and not far from that the cemetery. A number of the graves are covered in a kind of canopy made of sheet metal. They appear to be a tradition here and reflect the fact that steel was also manufactured and processed here. Some are still well cared for but others are rusting and falling over.
