Light micrograph of female breast tissue showing intraduct carcinoma (cancer). The vast majority of breast cancers originate in the epithelium of the mammary ducts, the channels which drain milk produced in the lobules towards the nipple. In intraduct carcinoma (cancer) the glandular epithelium proliferates and distends the ducts: small ducts become filled with large tumour cells (more darkly stained areas), which have large nuclei and prominent nucleoli. Breast cancers are common, with a peak incidence in the decade before the menopause.
