'A procession was formed to conduct [his Royal Highness] to Government House. The Viceroy and the Duke of Edinburgh, with the Lieutenant-Governor, the Commander-in-Chief, the members of the Council, and the principal civil and military officers, the Maharajah Scindia, the Governor of Madras, the Governor of Bombay, and the Maharajah of Jeypore, rode on horseback, with the native chiefs at the side. Following the horsemen were a number of carriages, containing the Countess of Mayo, Lady Napier, the Begum of Bhopal, and other ladies. Divisions of the cavalry and artillery preceded and followed the procession as a body-guard. The volunteers formed a guard of honour to receive his Royal Highness on scene was grand and imposing; large numbers of all classes were present to witness the reception. The crowd of natives was immense, lining the road from Prinsep's Ghaut to Government House. About sixty elephants belonging to the native chiefs were assembled in the grounds of Government House.
