In 1873 he waselected a Judge of the Circuit Court for the FifthJudicial Circuit, and was re-elected in 1879. In1883 President Arthur appointed him Chief Jus-tice of Utah, where he has since resided, thoughsuperseded by the appointment of a successor byPresident Cleveland. At the first State elec-tion in Utah, held in November, 1895, he waschosen one of the Judges of the Supreme Courtof the new Commonwealth, but was defeatedfor re-election, by his Democratic opponent, SCENES IN SOUTH PARK.
