(Dean) Stone, was born in Carrollcounty, Missouri, July 17, 1870. He attendedthe public schools of Hopwood, Fayettecounty, Pennsylvania, but being one of theeldest of a family of twelve, he was com-pelled to seek employment at an earlyage. He was but ten years of age when work in the coke yard at McClureStation. Westmoreland county, followed coke burning and mining untilhe attained the age of seventeen years, thenbegan working in a saw mill, where he hadthe great misfortune to lose his left leg. Thiswas a most serious handicap for the young.
