William Hawes (1736-1808). 1834 illustration of the English physician William Hawes. Hawes is best known for pioneering the possibility of resuscitating a person who was apparently dead from drowning, or other causes of asphyxia. This work eventually led to the founding of the Royal Humane Society (then the 'Society for the Recovery of Persons Apparently Drowned') in 1774, a British charity that promotes lifesaving intervention.
