As too much cannot be written of this statue, in its ma-jestic beauty and simplicity, I make an extract from a pri-vate letter of the distinguished American sculptor, whichwill be perused with deep interest: After reading the biography of General Morgan, andstudying the history of his military career, I felt it essentialto a proper portrayal of his character, that the statue shouldrepresent a man of action—intrepid, aggressive, alert—atthe same time I wished to indicate, by certain movementsof the head and left arm, that there was a sympatheticquality, even a tenderness, in the nature of the daringGeneral. I represented him with drawn sword, advancing with histroops, his attention for the moment attracted by somemovement of the enemy on his left. The costume I found portrayed very accurately byTrumbull, which agreed with all recorded
