A pearl sea star (Fromia monilis: 20 cms.), showing its characteristic red central area with brightly coloured plates on the five arms. Sea stars have the ability to grow a new arm if one has been eaten by a predator. It is possible, in consequence, to encounter individuals which are in the process of regeneration and have four rather than five arms. The animal lives in rocky areas, where it feeds on sponges and small invertebrates; its mouth being on the underside of the central plate. It moves about on the substrate using hundreds of hydraulically-controlled tube feet. Egyptian Red Sea.
