PROBABLY THE LAST OF THE OLD FYKE NET FISHERMEN IN THE HUMBER ESTUARY AT GRIMSBY. UK
This picture shows a double ended Fyke net which is only visible because the tide is dropping, when fishing it is completely submerged. The two Fyke nets are separated by a 'guide net' looks like a tennis court net if you will and when the soles hit that net they are 'guided' into the mouth of either one of the two Fyke nets where, once in there is no way out. The fisherman walks out to the nets as the tide goes out, unties the rope at the 'cod end' and empties the fish out. The height of Fyke nets vary but these are about 24 inches high. The fisherman in this image is Mr 'Bubs' Cromer a well known local retired trawler skipper who still likes to catch his dinner in this old traditional way. . This man, My Ernest Cromer (now deceased) is almost certainly the very last Humber Fyke net fisherman.
