The Sunday Stoker

Sunday afternoon at the steam shed and an array of gurgling, hissing giants await their next turn of duty. But like a horse, the steam locomotive has to be continually fed and watered and steam raisers flit from engine to engine to keep the fires topped with coal and the boilers with water. The location is Tubarao on the Teresa Cristina railway in Brazil and the engines are the world’s last Texas type 2-10-4s - American steam super power scaled down for metre gauge operation in Brazil. December 1978.
