The Arcadian Gate, the best preserved of the four original gateways into the ancient city of Messene in the Greek Peloponnese.

The Arcadian Gate, the best preserved of the four original gateways into the ancient city of Messene in the Greek Peloponnese. The road to the north still passes through the gateway as it heads towards the region of Arcadia. There is, in fact, a double gateway with a circular courtyard in the middle. The courtyard has the remains of two niches in the wall which would have held statues of the gods, one of whom was probably Hermes. Shown here is the remains of a monumental door post, half tumbled to the ground.
