Over the roofs of a neighbourhood from the castle walls at Carcassonne. The castle is a French historical hilltop town with its medieval fortified castle complete with narrow cobbled stone streets and dwellings in the department of Aude, in the region of Occitanie, southern France. Carcassonne is the largest fortified doubled walled city in Europe (among those that have their defensive wall still intact). It is known as the Cite de Carcassonne, dating back to the Gallo-Roman period. Since that time, major additions were made to the castle in the 13th and 14th centuries. The castle was restored by the theorist and architect Eugène Viollet-le-Duc in 1853. In 1997, the castle was added to the UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites Pix shows:
