Pont au Change
The view taken in 1828, shows the Pont au Change across the widest part of the River Seine. Originally known as the Grand Pont it takes its current name from the moneylenders who resided in the locality in the 12th century. A bridge has existed at this point from time immemorial in one form or another, being rebuilt after every destruction by flood and fire. The bridge was used for market and gambling stalls but these were removed in 1604 by order of the king. The buildings of Paris may be seen on either side of the river. The image was drawn by T T Bury under the direction of A Pugin and engraved by B Winkles
