Prolapsing haemorrhoid (piles) around the anus of a 67 year old female patient. The skin around the anus is red and inflamed, a condition known as perianal dermatitis. Piles are common, particularly during pregnancy due to extra pressure on the veins in the anus. Some people have a congenital weakness of these veins. Mild cases are controlled by drinking plenty of fluids and a high-fibre diet. Severe cases are treated by surgery.
