The Latin name, Alauda, is, according to Pliny, Suetonius and Varro, of Gaulifli extradlion. Hence the prefent French, term Alouette. In Italian, it is called Lodola, Pclronella, AHodola, Alodetia. In Spanifli, Eugniada. In old Saxon, Leefnvcrc or Leeurich. In modern German, Heid-lenhe, Sang-lerche, Himme.'- hrchcy Korn-lerchey Groffe-lerche, Field-lerchey &c. i. e.
