We wrote December 22 in our journals and hadhardly a piece of meat in the pantry. We had justcrossed the river and were about to round a hill, separat-ing us from the Belgrano basin, when we caught sight offour deer, two bucks with their hinds steadily regardingus and shaking their little stumps of tail as they utteredtheir peculiar cooing note. We went up to himbut he stood quite still looking at us with his large, intelligent eyes, the blood slowly dripping down on theflowers of the heath. We wanted to give him hiscoup de grace, but in spite of one bullet in the head andone in the chest, he suddenly showed a spark of lifeand rushed down to the water. We let the dogs loosebut instead of making for the wounded bucks they.
