Corridor in cloister at Mont Saint Michel monastery with wooden rib vaulted ceiling and stone arched walls.

Corridor in cloister at Mont Saint Michel monastery with wooden rib vaulted ceiling and stone arched walls. Mont Saint Michel, site of a monastery since the 8th century after the Archangel Michael appeared to St. Aubert, the bishop of Avranches. Initially unwilling he was persuaded to the task after the Archangel burnt a hole in his head with his finger. Built on a small rocky island a half mile from the Normandy coast, at the mouth of the Conesnon river on the Cotentin Peninsular. Annexed by William Duke of Normandy (the conqueror) and pictured in the Bayeaux tapestry. It was built by the Italian architect William de Volpiano in the Romanesque style. Later additions included a Gothic refectory and cloisters and fortifications including ramparts, towers and courtyards added by Charles VI. The fortifications held off many attacks by the English during the Hundred Years War. After the French Revolution the Abbey was closed and became a prison until 1863 when it was declared a historic monument in 1874 and a UNESCO world heritage site in 1979.
