Lime nail gall or bugle gall chemically induced caused by the mite Eriophyes tiliaa as distorted red projection upper leaf face
Nail galls growing on the upper surface of a common lime Tilia x europaea leaf. Caused by the mite Eriophyes tiliae are characterised by being greater than 8 mm tall with pointed tips and apear in female mites move on to the leaves in spring, as they suck the sap, they release chemicals that cause the upward growth of hollow finger like extensions coloured yellow-green or red. The female then lays one egg in each gall, and the larval mites feed and mature inside the gall. The emerged adult mites mate and the females move to bark crevices for winter.
