This latterfault, which is most commonly found on the wing, is aninterruption of the solid evenness of colour, as thoughthe buff colour had been sprinkled or pencilled Avithlighter patches, or as if lightly dusted with flour. It isthe most objectionable feature in all Buff breeds, andvery difficult to breed out. It is most commonly metwith on the wing-bow of a hen, and though such birdsmai/ breed a good cockerel, they rarely, if ever, breed asound-coloured pullet. As to its cause there is anamount of uncertainty, but I have found it most com-mon in other Buff breeds when there has been a markeddifference in the shade of the wing of the cock andthat of the hen to which he is mated, e. g. if the cockswing-bow has an approach to redness in tone and thehens is pale there will be many mealy BUFF COCHIN of Councillor G. of 1st and Cup, Royal Show. 265 ASIATIC BREEDS OF POULTRY 267 The colour should not only be sound, and even inshade on the top, but should be sound underneath orbuff to the skin, 7iot a golden top and Avhite shaft of the feather should be of the same colour asthe fluff, and not, as often happens, buff at the tip andwhite at the root. When the shaft of the feather islighter than the web the streaky appearance is calledshqftiness, and is often seen on the breast feathers of anotherwise good specimen. The flight and tail feathersshould also be free from white or black markings. Inall Buff breeds there is often a loss of colour afterthe flrst year, and a little white is not so objectionablein an old bird as in a young one. The colour of the hen should be of an even soft shadethroughout. The wings, flights, and foot feather shouldbe free from black. In m
